Gardening Clay

Unlike gardening sand which reduces the amount of water retained in soil, gardening clay helps keep water in soil and provides firm structure for plant root systems.

When clay is dry it can be very hard, making it difficult for plants to grow, so limited amounts of clay are recommended, however it does serve a useful purpose so it is a good idea to have some clay in your garden soil.

The Duncan Garden in Spokane's Manito Park has soil containing just the right amount of clay so the soil remains moist but not too wet.
